The first autumn run

The beeches turn in about three weeks. We timed the first Autumn Colours train for the middle of them.

Every October the woods around Fernhollow put on a show: first the beeches go yellow at the top, then the whole hillside turns copper, and in about three weeks it’s over.

Timing it

We watch the trees from the footplate every day in late September. The first Autumn Colours train runs when the guard says the woods are ready, usually around the 5th of October.

The loop

The train stops at Fernhollow for forty minutes. The woodland loop is a mile and a half, mostly flat, and there’s hot apple juice on the platform when you get back.

Tickets go on sale in September; the first weekend always sells out.
