A model of a green hill valley with a long stone viaduct of many arches crossing it, a stream below and patchwork fields, under a painted sky

Platform 1 · Millbrook

All aboard for the valley

Nine and a quarter miles of narrow-gauge line, a viaduct of twelve arches and a small green engine that has climbed it since 1889. Scroll, and we're off.

The line

Five stations, one little train

From the market town at the bottom to the heather at the top, every stop has a reason to get off. Ride along.

    Where it all starts

Tickets, the buffet and the engine shed. Arrive twenty minutes early to watch the crew coal up and turn the engine.

A small country station with a wooden canopy, flower tubs, a bench and a lamp post, the track curving away into green hills
  2. Fernhollow

    Mile 3¼

    Into the woods

The line climbs at 1 in 40 through the pines. On cold mornings the mist sits in the cutting and the train comes out of it like a ghost.

Narrow-gauge track curving through a misty pine wood, ferns along the line
  3. Kestrel Bridge

    Mile 5

    Over the river

A short iron bridge over the Kestrel, with a waterfall on the left. The guard slows down so you can look.

A small iron girder bridge carrying a single track over a rocky river with a little waterfall and a hut
  4. Hatherby

    Mile 7

    Market day

On Saturdays the market sets up beside the line: cheese, bread and the valley's honey. Change here for the walking trails.

A tiny market square beside the railway with stalls of cheese wheels and baskets, cobbles and a stone bridge over the track
  5. Summit Halt

    Mile 9¼

    The top of the line

A single platform in the heather, 412 metres up. The engine runs round its train while you take in three counties.

A small halt with one short platform on a heather-covered hilltop at golden hour, the line winding down to the valley
