Morning Mist

The first train up, through the mist

The first train of the day leaves before the visitors arrive, when the valley still belongs to the crew and the birds. It’s the quietest ride on the line, and on autumn mornings the best: the mist lies in the cutting through Fernhollow woods, and the engine climbs out of it into the sun.

At Summit Halt the crew runs the engine round its train while you stretch your legs; on a clear day you can see three counties. You’re back at Millbrook in time for a late breakfast in the buffet.
